WUZDA In Partnership With Key Stakeholders In Northern Region Verify Districts On Status Of Open Defecation

Nanumba north, Savelugu and Kumbungu districts are the latest to submit their names for verification on Open Defecation status after stakeholders launched the Open Defecation League Table which was aimed at rekindling the efforts and zeal of districts in their fights against indiscriminate defecation in the open.

Various stakeholders including the region’s Environmental Health and Sanitation and NGOs with operations in Water and sanitation put together a table to indicate positions of districts in the Northern Region and thier strides in curbing open defecation.

After the release of the table, some districts who performed lower than their fellows sat up and it appears they are keen on raising their levels on the next one.

A technical team led by WUZDA’s training coordinator Mr. Ibrahim Abdul Ganiyu, took visits to Nanumba North, Savelugu, Kumbungu and other districts to assess the level of open defecation in the area, and the efforts made so far by authorities after they submitted their interest to the technical team.

The ODF League Table was launched on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 in Tamale at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council by the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Abdallah Abubakari with support from the Environmental and Sanitation Unit Regional Manager, Mr. Rex Jakpa Mumuni.

From the assessments conducted in all the 26 districts in Northern Region, Mion district comes first with the least percentage of residence who defecate in the open, follow by East Mamprusi (Gambaga), Karaga, Nanumba North (Bimbilla) and Tatale/ Sanguli . These are the first five districts that have the least percentage of residence who defecate in the open.

They are the districts where the districts assemblies are putting in more efforts to eliminate the menace of open defecation.

The assessment also revealed that Bunkpurugu is the last district on the open defecation ranking with the highest percentage of residence who defecates in the open.

Other districts including; North Gonja (Daboya), West Mamprusi (Walewale), Bole,Tamale Metro and Moaduri (Yagaba/Kubori) respectively are among the districts where Open Defecation is highly practiced in the region.

In these districts efforts by the district assembly are not effective in tackling the menace of open defecation.
The open defecation League Table is part of the strategies adopted by the Regional Coordinating Council and its partners to step up the efforts of districts in addressing the practice of open defecation in the region.

Training Coordinator for the Wuni Zaligu Deveopment Association (WUZDA), Mr. Ibrahim Abdul Ganiyu who is also the team leader for a team following up on districts to for identification and verification, says the League Table has really helped in putting districts on their toes and helped them to be more responsive to issues of defecation.

The open defecation League Table is part of the strategies adopted by the Regional Coordinating Council and its partners to step up the efforts of districts in addressing the practice of open defecation in the region.

The main indicator of how districts performed is the percentage of certified ODF communities per district.

An ODF community which is the main indicator is one with no visible faeces and all households have access to and use latrines.
