WUZDA-Ghana Commemorates World Toilet Day 2023.

The World Toilet Day serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness about sanitation and hygiene, urging millions worldwide to adopt practices that combat poor sanitation in our communities and homes. Across the globe, particularly in Africa, the issues of inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene, and related health risks are alarming. Governments often need help to prioritize the battle against poor sanitation. Knowledge and information are pivotal in reshaping perceptions, fostering conformity, and encouraging compliance with good sanitation and hygiene practices among the populace.

WUZDA-Ghana has been actively involved in sanitation and hygiene promotion in Ghana since 2004, with a particular focus on the five Northern Regions. The organization’s efforts are recognized by key stakeholders, including government bodies, traditional chiefs, media, and households, who collaborate effectively with WUZDA-Ghana to address the country’s sanitation challenges.

In recognition of its impactful work, WUZDA-Ghana was invited by the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly together with APDO, SamaSama, TFHO, and a delegation of the association of latrine artisans to participate in a Sanitation Sales Bazaar. The event, scheduled for November 28, 2023, in Yilo Nayili near Tamale Airport, aimed to educate, create awareness, and showcase WUZDA-Ghana’s sanitation and hygiene products and services to the general public.

WUZDA-Ghana designs various types and sizes of toilet products and offers a unique “Latrine Sanitation Credit” facility to target communities like Yilo Nayili. This credit initiative supports those with limited financial means, providing flexible payment arrangements to purchase toilet facilities. In the municipality, more than 75% (roughly 18000 out of 73000 have access to toilets) lack basic sanitation, with Yilo Nayili being among the most alarming communities.

However, the organizational policy also created or established a “Latrine Sanitation Credit” facility to support those who cannot outright purchase as a result of low-income flow. This credit policy provides the opportunity for many households, individuals, and private institutions to access toilet facilities with flexible payment arrangements.

Therefore, collaboration with national and international partners is imminent to reach the number of people in dire need of sanitation in our municipality.

The Sanitation Sales Bazaar left a lasting impact on the community, raising awareness among residents about the crucial link between sanitation and overall health and well-being. Participants have called for more such events periodically to ensure continuous access to sanitation products and knowledge for the benefit of our communities.
